Lundy Says-Amusing Info from Lundy Wilder

I spotted this photo on an advertising-watch website but no one has info on location or product. They thought it was a clever, attention grabbing concept. (Click to enlarge if necessary, image too big for IE in 'med' size.) Might be good for a OB/GYN Group.

On the 4th I had lunch with AnnaSophia Robb. the star of ' Because of Winn-Dixie ', the movie w/ adult actor Jeff Daniels. (On the left in photo) I had not seen the movie and the best I could say was that I had seen the coming attraction a whole bunch of times. Turns out that she has also been in several other films, including the Johnny Depp Willy Wonka & Chocolate Factory film. The list is on her website, see link above. Her dad is the architect for some friends of mine who are in the process of planning a new home.

Last night the The Wharf in Orange Beach , (humongous new development) had The Mobile Symphony and fireworks at their brand new outdoor amplitheater. Really nice facility. The sound was good down front where our seats were. Later, we moved to the upper aluminum bleachers for the fireworks. Up there, the enthusiastic audience's foot stomping along with the stirring marches became pretty loud and annoying...but maybe that only happens when there are a lot of children present. One weird thing was the 'water police'...before we could enter the facility, every woman's purse was inspected and all water bottles removed. It caused a big bottle-neck. They have to re-think and improve this situation. If there had been beer or booze, that would have been removed too, but as you can see from the confiscated goods, ...no bombs, no handguns, no beer, mostly water and many of the bottles only half full. Mr. Etzioni, a professor of computer science and engineering at the University of Washington found that people in neighboring seats on airplanes paid less than he did and bought tickets after he did. Mr. Etzioni, the brains behind such early Internet companies as MetaCrawler, a search engine, and Netbot, an online comparison shopping service, decided this was a situation computers could address. All he would need is a mountain of data to mine for information about seat supply and demand and an algorithm to predict how the airlines' algorithms were going to price those seats. The result: Farecast , an airfare search engine that also predicts how much the price of an airline ticket will rise or fall over the coming days (www.farecast.com). Still in Beta, it only addresses flights from two cities now, but will continue to add destinations.

Great NYT article about how blogs are bringing about a whole new level of corporate accountability. The story is about a dude's frustrating afforts to cancel his AOL account and the recorded 20+ min. phone conversation with the AOL 'customer service' rep that was eventually posted to his blog and gained national (and AOL's) attention. Also a fellow blogged about video taping a Comcast serviceman who fell asleep on his sofa while on hold w/ Concast service rep line. The video bacame a popular national watch. The Senate Commerce Committee deadlocked 11 to 11 on an amendment inserting some very basic net neutrality provisions into a moving telecommunications bill. Senator Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) explained why he voted against the amendment and gave an amazing primer on how the internet works. One short exerpt: I just the other day got, an internet was sent by my staff at 10 o'clock in the morning on Friday and I just got it yesterday. Why? Because it got tangled up with all these things going on the internet commercially. They want to deliver vast amounts of information over the internet. Today would have been Miller's 26th B'Day. Here are some birthday photos from his 11th and his 15th birthday and a few others. In one he has on some of his Grandaddy's vintage Lily Pulitzer pants. In another he was so proud of the size of the catfish that he caught that he was holding the cat for size comparison. He only bleached his hair once. He walked into the room with the cat and put it on his head, but it didn't work out as planned and I always thought it was one of the funniest photos of him I ever took. Miller was the most brilliant, funny, charming, thoughtful, & loving person I have ever known. He was finishing up Grad School and had every pilot's certification possible for his age when he died. There is no telling what he would be doing today had he lived. We all miss him so.

A woman living in Germany is auctioning off her red Ferrari Enzo sports car and including a little extra in the package -- herself. The 26-year-old has invited bids on Internet auction site ebay starting at 1.25 million euros ($1.6 million). She said she was rich herself, liked her car and was looking for a man who could foot the bill for such a luxury. "Only a millionaire could afford such a car," said the woman, who gave her name as Leila and said she once worked as a singer in Syria. "I want a man who doesn't like me just for my money." About 10 a.m. I heard his chirp from inside the house. He was in a tree I had never seen him in before and it closer to my house than his usual perches. Guess he knew I was concerned. He stopped chirping when he saw me. It was hard to take his photo as the sun was almost directly above his head. I went back in and got the binoculars that I bought from my friend Keith, the birdwatcher, yesterday. Keith has since moved up to $1000 binoculars and these were his 3rd pair back and he wasn't using them so he sold them to me.... Extra to him and a bargain for me. They will be handy for all sorts of wildlife watching on and around the water. A baby hippopotamus, swept into the Indian Ocean by the tsunami, is thriving thanks to the love of a 120-year-old tortoise. Owen, a 300kg, one-year-old hippo, was swept down the Sabaki River, into the ocean and then back to shore when the giant waves struck the Kenyan coast. The dehydrated hippo was found by wildlife rangers and taken to the Haller Park animal facility in the port city of Mombasa. Pining for his lost mother, Owen quickly befriended a giant male Aldabran tortoise named Mzee - Swahili for "old man". When we released Owen into the enclosure, he lumbered to the tortoise which has a dark grey colour similar to grown up hippos The pair are now inseparable.
