Fanciful Face Masks

Image
Doing my part to stay safe and help others I made two facemasks from paper. Just happened we had recently bought a new shopvac and with it was a brand new huge white vacuum bag. It was not marked HEPA but I used it anyway. On a site called Sweet Red Poppy is a downloadable pattern for a mask that you can sew from fabric or like I did, glue a paper one together. I recently got some delightful cocktail napkins from Caspari online so I decided to cover my mask with a charming print by Parvaneh Holloway , one of my favorite Caspari artists. These napkins are printed in Germany and have perfect registration and vivid colors. I used the "adult" pattern for both mine and Ken's mask and altho Ken's fit him great (he is quite tall) mine was a bit big so if I make any more masks, I'll use the "teenage" size for me. I used twist-tab wire in the nose area. BTW--Don't you love my cute top ? I got it used at a local consignment shop called "...

Busy Day

Image
I met with John from Island Air, a local Trane dealer this afternoon and at same time I received a UPS package which was a lovely gift from Viking Range. It contained an assortment of Viking branded items including a mousepad, keychain, wine stoppers, apron, pot holder, oven mitt, coasters, and several other items. They said the local distributer would be in touch. Cool. My osprey has returned. I heard his loud CHIRP thru the house walls (only bird noise that comes thru my thick walls) and sure enuf, he was in a tree very near my house. Later in the day, he sat in the tall tree next door and Dave and I happened to be watching while he dove right in front of the yard into the lagoon and brought up a fish. He flew off to the east w/ the fish. I bet it is a 'he' and he was taking the fish to Mrs. Osprey and kids. Last yr he would sit in the tree nearby and eat the fish, but maybe he got married this past winter. Click these photos to see any of them in a larger size.

Coastal Living Idea House at Bon Secour Village

Image
Coastal Living Magazine's info about the Coastal Living Idea House (or cottage) as it is occasionally called. Some 'cottage'. I notice that the sales info says it has these fantastic views of the Intercoastal Waterway but I wonder if it will when another house is built on the lot between it and the waterway. I have not bothered to look at the lot layouts, but it appears to be on an interior lot. Our waterfront Little Lagoon 'showhouse' is Villa Lagoon. Coastal Living Magazine sponsored an "Idea House' right here in Gulf Shores in the new Bon Secour Village development. My friend Mark invited me to go with him. It was a very nice lawn party with music , loads of good food, nicely set tables under the tent and on the lawn. We could take interior photos in the kitchen only. It had Viking appliances for the most part. These be some pricey diggs. They are not exactly on the water, but the development is built alongside the Intercoastal Waterway. Right now onl...

Weekend

Fabo weather here...we drove around in the Thing, but it pulled it's opossum trick of acting dead at Tacky Jack's II and we had to leave it in the parking lot and 'hitch' a ride home last night. The three gals who took us back to the Lagoon House were a hoot....3 mom's in their 30's having a big ole time at a beach house for the weekend or week. They were very sweet to take us back to the house even tho it was out of the way for them. They entertained us with stories of their last few days the whole way back...describing how lady like they were in their most trying moments and how one of them threw up in a cup by the side of the pool and the fellow sunbathers around them never noticed. Dave and I went over to Becky and Warren's beach house and hung out on the decks and beach walked on Sat. Also took wireless laptop and got online w/ their open wireless connection. On Sunday we went to the Episcopal Church on my street. The new rector is a really nice g...

Big Birds and Small

Image
One of the good things this time of year is that the Blue Angels always do tons of practising between Thanksgiving and Christmas. I am told that they are training the new guys. It is amazing to me that the BA pilots only fly for one year. Only one guy has flown two years. They are zoooooooming up and down the beach and sometimes make turns right over my place. They do smoke trails, and other maneuvers. Usually two at a time is what I see. There is obviously some other kinds of training going on, higher up, since I have experienced several rounds of sonic booooooms. One recent one was the strongest ever. My ten foot glass doors popped and bowed like I have never seem. They even continued to rattle in aftershock for a mili-second or two. We have been having very mild, delightful weather. Some days are slightly overcast, or foggy, but if it is close to 70 degrees, that is still a great winter day. For a while we had 70 degree days and cold nights, but now it is basically the same temp da...

Thirsty Thursday

Image
Remember that old term...thirsty thursday , ...i have not thought of that in 25 years. I guess it jumped into my head because I am taking a moment to catch my breath while Glenn drives from Foley to G.S. and we head over to the Chamber's Business After Hours at The Wharf. Then after that is: go to The Beach Club for dinner and music. We may not need dinner tho. Usually A.H. has so much food it can be dinner. The Frank Brown International Songwriter's Festival is going on. It is a 10 day event. Tonight at The Beach Club is a great 3-some.... Larry Cordel , Carl Jackson and Jerry Salley . I have seen them a whole bunch of times. They are Nashville guys and Larry C. won the Country Music Award "Album of the Year' a year or two before Ivan. These guys do 3 part harmony and play together a lot in Nashville and I have seen them on the Turner South network "Bluebird Cafe' show. Today was event filled, ...i am looking forward to some chill time. Now I find Blogger ...

Weekend at Becky's

Image
Last weekend I stayed down on West Beach at my good friend Becky Gottsegen's with Becky and three of her precious Baton Rouge girl friends. We had a ball. Becky had read this small book called "A Weekend to Change Your Life" and had mapped out these little exercises for us to do. Of course, there was a lot of improvising and abreviating going on. Mostly we had fun.... Linda, Georgia, Rosalind, Becky and me. Linda made cookies, we all made pot holders ! We looked a lots of old photos...plenty when we were young and cute. We took beach walks, swam , or rather drank margauritas in the pool. One interesting thing to me, Georgia, who I had never met before, sister is married to a Memphis lawyer who happens to be the first cousin of one of my very good since childhood friends. Small world. Becky and Warren's super home is on a super stretch of beach that adjoins the wildlife refuge. The monarch butterflies were everywhere. Each year they pass thru here during migration and...

U-Haul Trailer

Image
I am just now getting around to posting some of the photos from a couple weeks ago. When I went to pick up my U-Haul trailer in Memphis, there were several of the size I needed. I knew immediately which one I wanted. I pointed to this one and told the guy that was certainly the one for me. The others had images of some places like Oregon or who-knows-where. When I went to turn it in down here, believe it or not, there was already a Gulf Shores one recently turned in here, and I thought I was really gonna surprise our little U-Haul place. This was my 3rd trip down w/ a trailer, the guy who runs the U-Haul place now sees me pull up and hollers "Hey Ms. Wilder"

Ospreys in Oct.

Image
I wonder if the plural of osprey is ospries. Anyone know ? Guess I could do some research, if I had time. Or made time. Yesterday was georgous. I decided to bail rainwater and clean my pedal boat, which I did in a swimsuit, except the lagoon water was still too high to tip my boat up and drain the hull which got flooded in last week's weird 2 or 3 day wind/rain storm. So soon as the tide is lower, I'll pull the plug, tip it up and let it drain out the drain hole. When I first went outside, the osprey that is NOT 'my' osprey, was in the tree. I peeked around the corner of the house and took a couple of photos, but the second he saw me, he took flight. Look at the big version (click it) of the photo to see how enormous his wingspan is. First two photos are the 'other' osprey. Second two are my osprey buddy. After a little bit, MY osprey was in the same tree, and he watched me bail and mess with my boat. I came and went and did whatever I wanted and he just watc...

I Rescued a Boat Today

Image
Maybe I'll get to keep it...who knows. It's registration is good till July 2007 acc'd to the sticker on the side. We had this terrific wind storm that went on for 2 days solid. Sometimes there was rain, but mostly there was huge wind all the time. It was a lot like a hurricane's arrival or the aftermath if you are on the east side of it. The storm photos are from yesterday afternoon and evening. I saw what looked like a stray boat banging on the rocks and cracked concrete (from Fredric and Ivan) on the point of some nearby, uninhabited property. Today when the wind & rain finally stopped I put on a swim suit and flip-flops and grabbed a coil of rope and ventured over to it. The going was rough as the water is pushed way up into the lagoon and is over the tops of the bulkheads and the boat slips next door. Now what I didn't have with me was a lifejacket, a paddle or a cell phone. I managed to get the boat loose after I untied knots and un-did the messed up riggi...
