Pomegranate Tutorial

Right now, in the stores that sell Pom Wonderful juice, you will probably find jumbo fresh pomegranates from the same company. They have little Pom Wonderful stickers on them. They are GREAT. They are HUGE.

And they are better for you than the bottles juice --they have vitamin C that is not present in the bottled juice (and probably other stuff ). Here in Gulf Shores, the giant fresh poms are 2 for $3 at one store and $1 each at another. They keep great in the fridge--I bought 8 the other day.

You just eat the juicy seeds, inner seed and all. One of the nice things about this variety of pomegranate is that the inner stuff you don't eat is not bittter so if you happen to get some in a bite, no big deal.

The friendly produce guy at my Wal-Mart gave me a little brochure that showed the best way to attack a pomegranate. (and as my friend Carol pointed out, eating a pom looks like a small scale massacre, so attack is an appropriate word). Cut into the rind all the way round like a pumpkin lid on the top and peel off. Then make slices into the rind in quadrants and split it open.

If you live in a nice climate, sit on the porch, pop the seeds in your mouth and throw the rest out in the bushes.
